About the Exhibition
Art is a cryptic messenger, but the art meme is its cultural nemesis.
Memes really are little windows into the world, into the zeitgeist, and into the vastness of human potential. The meme is the message, and the message has never been delivered so forcefully and with such intensity by so many people all over the world at once.
Memes are also a thing in the art world – and it’s amazing how they accelerate and facilitate the conversation and make us want to touch grass together, knowing we are not alone with our problems. That’s something any fancy specialized art review just isn’t able to do.
Before internet culture, the art world belonged to the museums and to rich people. It’s mostly the same today, except for the fact that we, the people on the big spectrum of art, can have immediate access to this strange, self-absorbed world of blue chip galleries, art collectors and private art events through memes on social media.
This information is very helpful, because the more we know, the more we realize we don’t know about the people behind the luxury art industry, namely the CEOs of the art world and their hordes of staff.
And then, when we’re done with the dissertation lol, there’s a whole chapter about DALL-E 2, our new software god. And then you’ll see some of my art, both digital and physical, which is very influenced by meme formats and social media imagery.
Also, there’s a small collection of physical art, made by a few of my favorite Romanian artists and friends. These pieces could just as easily be internet art, but their physicality makes them more ‘art’, just like how talking in person makes us more ‘human’.
