Index of absence | NOIMA

Index of Absence marks the NOIMA group’s first exhibition at META Spațiu and represents one of the most articulate expressions of the collective practice developed by the five artists over the past two decades. The exhibition does not follow a retrospective model, nor does it simply bring together individual works. Rather, it functions as a field of convergence in which distinct practices, consolidated autonomously over time, reveal a shared concern: the capacity of painting to operate as a device for recording what is no longer present, to make perceptible the persistence of a past contact, of a withdrawn experience, of a gesture that has become a trace.

 

Founded in Timișoara in 2003, in the intellectual and emotional proximity of Constantin Flondor and in dialogue with the legacy of the Sigma and Prolog groups, NOIMA has developed one of the most consistent forms of collective artistic practice in contemporary Romania. Far from functioning as a circumstantial association of individuals, the group has cultivated, for over twenty years, an ecology of collaboration based on shared observation, direct experience in nature, performative interventions, and continuous reflection on the condition of the image. The plein-air painting sessions along the Danube and in Șirnea, the land-art interventions on the terraces of the Mureș, the collective actions in Vienna, Budapest, or Rome—all have fostered a culture of collaboration that goes beyond friendship or stylistic affinity, constituting instead a method of understanding: a way of producing meaning through shared experience.

 

The exhibition brings together individual works by Ciprian Bodea, Dan Gherman, Cosmin Frunteș, Andrei Rosetti, and Sorin Scurtulescu, without attempting to subsume their differences under a common aesthetic. Its aim is different: to identify a structural affinity, a shared intuition regarding the nature of the pictorial image. In all these practices, painting ceases to be understood as representation and becomes a form of indexing. It neither describes the world nor offers a visual equivalent of it; it records the encounter with it. The pictorial surface thus appears as a place of passage, as the sediment of an experience already consummated, yet still active in the materiality of the trace.

 

The exhibition’s title draws on the concept of the index in its fundamental semiotic sense: the sign that functions not through resemblance or convention, but through contact. Smoke indicates fire, a fingerprint indicates a hand, a trace indicates the passage of a body. The works brought together in Index of Absence operate within this logic. They do not affirm presences, but document withdrawals. They do not represent events, but preserve their residual effects. What the viewer encounters is, each time, the visible form of an absence.

 

In this sense, the exhibition proposes a reflection on the temporality of the image. Each work appears as a space in which two moments coexist: the moment of production and the moment of viewing. Between them opens an interval that the painting does not cancel out, but rather renders perceptible. The gesture has been consummated, the body has withdrawn, the experience has passed. What remains is the material persistence of the trace.
