About the exhibition

Sorin Scurtulescu explores the multidimensional nature of flowers through a fluid representation and sensitive reconfiguration, in which flowers are plucked from the conventional register and suspended in a process of dissolution and continuous becoming. The artist captures the flowers in a moment of meditative stillness, inviting the viewer to explore their fragile geometry and the overwhelming presence of texture.

Although floral paintings have traditionally been considered frivolous and lacking in conceptual weight, Sorin Scurtulescu's practice proves that the “decorative” is not devoid of concept and that pleasure does not exclude intellect. Scurtulescu uses pictorial materiality to re-dimension the perception of flowers, resorting to a dense impasto and a treatment of surfaces that is both brutal and delicate. Playing with the monumentality and architecture of flowers, the artist creates a subtle dynamic between the presence and absence of the landscape, revealing a creative tension. Each work becomes a living force that stages a larger discussion about painting and power, about language and meaning, by decontextualizing and denaturalizing flowers. “Decorative” thus becomes a tool to explore the power of imagery and conceptual layering through the diffuse materiality and soft, almost visceral overlays of color, bringing the raw sensibility of flowers to the forefront.

Beyond the personal, cultural or religious meanings that flowers have acquired over time, Sorin Scurtulescu creates spaces for introspection and discovery, in which every detail is both hidden and revealed. Scurtulescu's flowers are raw, textural and vivid, inviting viewers to confront the duality of nature – both aesthetic and unsettling.
